Advanced Seminar: Integrating Structural Dissociation, Ego State and EMDR Therapies NOTE CHANGE: 12 CE hours from EMDRIA approved; 30 NBCC masters level professional CEUs (including LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, LPC, and more) approved. SCROLL DOWN TO REGISTER. 1164 South East Street Amherst MA 01002 Meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month from September 11, 2018 through June 11, 2019, 10am to 1:15pm Each seminar is limited to 9 clinicians who are Level II trained and who use EMDR regularly with clients. Preference will be given to those who have done individual or group consultation with an EMDRIA Approved Consultant. COST: $100 per three-hour meeting or $80 for clinicians working fulltime in Community Mental Health. Partial scholarships may be available. A 2 session deposit ($200/$160) is required to hold your place. If event is cancelled, full refunds will be given. Full refund minus a $50 administrative fee will be given if participant withdraws more than two weeks before the workshop or Seminar begins. After that, no refund will be given. SEMINAR DESCRIPTION: EMDR Therapy can fail to make significant progress in the presence of dissociative parts of the personality (ANPs and EPs) or ego states that are hostile to the work, frightened of it, or whose needs aren’t being met in therapy. Most challenging of all can be Perpetrator Introjects who powerfully dictate that the rules of the past abuse still apply. Both therapists and clients are often largely unaware of these parts that block progress in therapy and make life so challenging. Through this intensive, small group seminar, you will: DEVELOP a sophisticated understanding of dissociative processes with clients with severe traumas. Even PTSD symptoms are dissociative in nature; PRACTICE in supervised triads two different techniques – the Meeting Place and the Healing Circle – for integrating Structural Dissociation and Ego State Therapy into your work with clients; INTEGRATE Ego State and EMDR therapies into immediate work with healthier clients to develop the skills needed to use them with your more challenged clients; UNDERSTAND the dissociative language of severely traumatized clients; IDENTIFY and WORK WITH the phobias of attachment, of traumatic memories and of inner experience in severely traumatized clients; LEARN TIP OF THE FINGER strategy and other Structural Dissociation techniques to stabilize dissociative clients; LEARN to target the internal experiences of dissociative clients to improve their functioning long before you can safely target childhood trauma. Didactic presentations and assigned readings will broaden your understanding; transcripts of many Ego State/EMDR and Structural Dissociation/EMDR sessions will facilitate your use of these approaches with clients. Case consultation will enrich your confidence and prepare you to integrate these Approaches with EMDR. Monthly meetings will facilitate your powerful learning process. Seminar Objectives Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe dissociative processes in clients with severe trauma histories with greater depth and understanding.
  2. Utilize their own Conference Room experience, readings, and case consultation to use this very beneficial approach to working with their clients’ ego states and/or alters.
  3. Determine in using the Conference Room with dissociative clients whether the adult client is present or is asked to leave or go to a soundproof booth.
  4. Apply their own Healing Circle experience, readings, and case consultation to use this deeply resourcing technique with clients with complex trauma.
  5. Apply their own personal experiences in the Conference Room and the Healing Circle to better understand therapist as self.
  6. Discern when to use Ego State and EMDR therapies with healthier clients to develop the skills needed to use these modalities with their more challenged clients.
  7. Describe the ways in which Perpetrator Introjects are in fact protective parts.
  8. Utilize new approaches to develop successful alliances with clients’ Perpetrator Introjects/”honchos” that have blocked progress and caused self-harm.
  9. Assess and analyze the dissociative language of severely traumatized clients.
  10. Recognize nonverbal dissociative processes in clients.
  11. Identify and work with the Structural Dissociation phobias of attachment and of attachment loss in Phase 1 of trauma treatment.
  12. Identify and work with the phobias of trauma-derived mental actions and of traumatic memories with dissociative clients in all 3 phases of trauma treatment.
  13. Identify when a client with severe trauma may be able to start safely processing childhood trauma, and what behaviors would categorize them as “not ready” to start processing.
  14. Describe the Structural Dissociation concept of mental level, composed of mental energy and mental efficiency.
  15. Apply the concept of mental level to a particular client over time, noting how it has varied and it’s impact on the capacity of the client to process trauma.
  16. Apply the Tip of the Finger strategy to stabilize Emotional Parts of dissociative clients.
  17. Explain how to target the internal experiences of dissociative clients to improve their functioning long before they can safely target childhood trauma.
  18. Utilize Structural Dissociation approaches and bilateral stimulation to process current situations and address internal interference.
  19. Note the differences between Fraser’s Dissociative Table Technique (the Conference Room) and Gonzalez & Mosquera’s Meeting Place and adapt them to their preferences and their clients’ situations.
  20. Discuss the three learned approaches using assigned readings including transcripts of many Ego State/EMDR and Structural Dissociation/EMDR sessions shared with the consent of my clients.
  21. Describe how case consultation enriches their confidence in working with complex trauma and prepares them to integrate these approaches with EMDR Therapy.
  22. Describe in their final paper how the Seminar has transformed their clinical practice, utilizing a case example.
Farnsworth Lobenstine, LICSW is on the national faculty of the EMDR Institute, serving as a Facilitator since 2001. An EMDRIA Approved Consultant, he has provided individual and group consultation services since 2003. He joined EMDR TRN/HAP as a Facilitator in 2005. Farnsworth works with children 10-12, adolescents and adults in private practice. He was closely involved with the development of the Western Massachusetts EMDRIA Regional Meeting/Network annual conferences. In 2007 he began teaching an academic year-long Advanced Seminar on the Integration of Ego State Therapy with EMDR Therapy. This has expanded to include Structural Dissociation. Farnsworth is just completing the 11th year of the highly successful and well-regarded Advanced Seminar. In 2013, at the request of a consultee, Farnsworth finally tackled teaching Weekend Workshops, “An Introduction to the Integration of Structural Dissociation, Ego State Therapy and EMDR Therapy.” Farnsworth discovered how much he loved this style of teaching, and especially doing live demonstrations with participants. Finally, in 2016, he added a third day using these same three modalities in the treatment of clients with Dissociative Identity Disorder. Questions?
